In-depth review: Alli

All the recent marketing and media hype for Alli has put a lot of hope in the general public. Finally the FDA has made a prescription drug available over-the-counter. Will this lead to a new healthier and more fit generation?

Unfortunately, it does not look that way. Why? Well, first let's see how Alli works.

Donald Hensrud, M.D. (a preventive medicine and nutrition specialist at Mayo Clinic) describes the weight loss concept behind Alli:

"Alli promotes weight loss by decreasing absorption of fat by the intestines, which reduces the number of calories you absorb.

Lipase, an enzyme found in the digestive tract, helps break down dietary fat into smaller components, so it can be used or stored for energy. Alli works by disabling lipase, which prevents the enzyme from breaking down the fat while it's in your digestive tract. The undigested fat continues through the intestines and is eliminated through bowel movements.

Alli is taken with fat-containing meals, up to three times a day. Because of how Alli works, it's recommended that you eat no more than 15 grams of fat with each meal. Eating higher amounts of fat can cause unwanted effects, such as urgent bowel movements, diarrhea and gas with oily spotting." - read more about Alli from the > Mayo Clinic

Everything sounds good so far, however, many of Alli's studies are based on the effectiveness of the prescription strength drug Xenical (which is a double does of the amount of Orlistat in Alli). The average weight loss experienced when using Xenical is 6 pounds more than with just exercise and dieting alone in a year's time. So, if you use Alli, you should see results averaging 3 pounds more of weight loss than with just exercise and dieting alone in a year's time.

These are actually low to middle of the range numbers for those that are not very enthusiastic about losing weight.

Now, factor this in with the less than desirable side-effects of Alli (Gas with oily discharge, loose stool or diarrhea, hard to control bowel movements, severe abdominal cramping, etc.).

Unless there is nothing else out there that seems to work to help you lose weight, we suggest that you keep Alli as your third or fourth alternative.

If you are seriously considering Alli, please be mindful of the side-effects and follow the directions and suggested useage.
