Manufacturer: GlaxoSmithKiline

Composition: Orlistat 60mg (Weight Loss Aid)

Amount per pack: 90 capsules

Product Claim: When you take Alli along with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet, you

can lose about 50% more weight than dieting alone.

Summary Review:

Alli is a relatively new weight loss product, which uses an over-the-counter (reduced strength) version of the FDA approved drug Orlistat.

Here are some thoughts on Alli by Donald Hensrud, M.D. (a preventive medicine and nutrition specialist at Mayo Clinic):

"Alli promotes weight loss by decreasing absorption of fat by the intestines, which reduces the number of calories you absorb...

... Alli can help you lose weight, but the weight loss likely won't be great — perhaps just a few pounds more than you would lose with diet and exercise alone." - read more about Alli from the > Mayo Clinic

Summary Conclusion:

We agree with Donald Hensrud, M.D.  "Alli can help you lose weight, but the weight loss likely won't be great — perhaps just a few pounds more than you would lose with diet and exercise alone."

Moreover, the side-effects (see below) are less than desirable. We are unsure that Alli's weight loss results will make us overlook the side-effects, which will most likely occur for most people.

Warnings:

Do not use: If you are taking cyclosporine. If you have been diagnosed with problems absorbing food. If you are not overweight

When using this product: Take a multivitamin once a day, at bedtime. Orlistat can reduce the absorption of some vitamins. Follow a well-balanced, reduced-calorie, low-fat diet. Try starting this diet before taking orlistat.

Orlistat works by preventing the absorption of some of the fat you eat. The fat passes out of your body, so you may have bowel changes. You may get:
- Gas with oily spotting
- Loose stools
- More frequent stools that may be hard to control

Stop use and ask a doctor if: Severe or continuous abdominal pain occurs. This may be a sign of a serious medical condition.
